Joesph Sturge Statue Birmingham open edition fine art print UK
✨ About the Artwork
Last year I’d heard about the statue of Joseph Sturge in Edgbaston, but it wasn’t until I was visiting Edgbaston Village during the Birmingham Light Festival that I realised I was only moments away from it.
So I went to find him.
Camera in hand, I documented the statue because I knew instantly this was something I wanted to honour in my art.

Joseph Sturge (1793–1859) was an English Quaker, abolitionist and radical reformer. He founded the British and Foreign Anti-Slavery Society (now Anti-Slavery International) and dedicated his life to ending slavery.
In the 1830s, he travelled to Jamaica and exposed the realities of the so-called “apprenticeship” system that followed the abolition of slavery.
His published reports helped persuade British Parliament to bring forward full emancipation. He also helped establish Free Villages for formerly enslaved people — one of which was named Sturge Town in his memory.
That’s huge.
And yet so many people in Birmingham walk past his statue without knowing who he was or what he stood for.
This artwork is my way of documenting him in Brum — placing light, botanical layers and atmosphere around the monument to symbolise growth, freedom and legacy.
It’s about remembering the people who shaped history, and making sure their stories don’t quietly disappear into the background.
It felt important to create.
- Because art can document.
- Art can honour.
- Art can remind.
- And Joseph Sturge deserves to be remembered.
